Not sure if this is off topic but I want to make a few planes for my guitar building.   I know a few of you have built your own hand planes. What book did you use as a reference? I have looked up a few but since I remember someones turning out so nice, I would lik eto follow in thier footsteps.

"Making & Mastering Hand Planes" by David Finck is the one I followed.

Also, anything by James, Krenov

I'm "cheating." I bought one of Ron Hock's Krenov kits and have made patterns proportionally changing dimensions for larger versions. And, I have one Steve Knight plane and expect a razee jack kit from him any day now.My centers are glued up from some long time air dried walnut, and cheeks and soles are some great ebony and rosewood from Bob C. Maybe I'll have to call them "Zooters." The irons and capirons are Hock.

I too used "Making & Mastering Hand Planes" by David Finck and believe it was a great book. I did not know there was so much to know.. I have only built one plane so far, a 12" smoothing plane with a hock blade. I did however alter the design some following the plans of David Marks from the DIY show he did on planes.
